General tips for learning languages

  • Speak! Practice as much as you can, and as early as possible. Do not refrain from speaking because "I don't know how to say this or that" or "my accent is bad". If you're not in a country where the language you learn is spoken, try to find someone to practice with. The internet is full of resources. Also, as you travel, even a few words in the local language will go a long way. You will usually get smiles or compliments back, and even if you don't understand what you're told, your brain will slowly get used to the new sounds. It's all positive!
  • Practice regularly. 10 minutes every day will be more efficient than an hour once a week. Read something over breakfast or lunch everyday, or listen to the language you learn while commuting to work.
  • Listen to music in the language you learn. The language portals can give some useful hints.
  • Watch movies. Whether you hear the language, or read the subtitles, it's good practice. Don't worry if you don't understand everything, hearing the language (just like with Wikibabel podcasts) is underestimated training. A good way to start is to watch kids films or cartoons. They typically rely on a more limited vocabulary, have little or no slang, and voices are also slower and clearer than regular movies. And they're fun too!
