Wikibabel is a free-content, web-based, user editable pool of language learning resources focusing on audio content.

Wikibabel aims at providing high quality language lessons to the largest audience possible. This means:

  • Offer all content for free. We do not and will not charge for accessing any of our content. No premium membership, no free preview. However, we welcome donations if you think the site has helped you.
  • Be available in any language. Although the site is only available in English now, we're aiming to translate it to the widest variety of languages possible, to allow anyone to use it.
  • Be technically open. We try to limit the technologies we use to free, open-source systems. We think that anyone with an internet access, however basic, should be able to at least read and listen to our contents.
  • Be lightweight. Many of our intended readership only has access to limited, slow, internet access. Therefore we try to keep the site simple and low in resource usage. That means limited usage of fancy images, videos and other animations.

We hope the site will become a useful resource in the following domains:

  • free language lessons available to anyone, from any language to any other,
  • minor language and dialects conservation, including non-written forms, by allowing anyone with an internet access and a microphone to record their language.

The website was started in early 2008 as a proof of concept, and has started gathering actual content from 2010.

The website development and administration team contact information is available on this page.
