The lesson editor is the central part of Wikibabel. This is where you can create and alter the content of what will become the lesson podcasts.

[edit] How it works

The lesson editor is aimed at helping you create and edit lessons in the easiest way possible. You should never have to type any code, not even wiki code.

The workflow is straightforward:

  • type in the text of the lesson,
  • open the sound recorder and speak in the microphone,
  • save the lesson. You're done!

You will be taken back to the lesson viewer. Your wikicast will be generated in the background, and depending on the server load, it will be available a few seconds later to download from the lesson page.

Below is a detailed description of all the editor components:

The most important: "Save lesson" will save all your changes into the database, including the sound bits you've recorded. If you edit a lesson but do not click this button before leaving, all your changes will be lost! "Cancel" just abandons anything you've just done.

There are two types of lines:

[edit] "Sentences"

They are the text that is read in both your language (or "source" language) and the language you're learning (or "target" language).

On the screenshot, sentences are for instance lines 3 and 4. From left to right, you will find:

  • The source part
  • the speaker: it is always the "teacher" for now
  • the text spoken: this is usually what your teacher would be saying or asking, such as: "this is how you say hello in Croatian." or "How do you ask what time it is?".
  • a microphone icon: Clicking on it will open the sound recorder.
  • The target part is very similar to the source part, plus you can select a different speaker
  • the repeat counter allows you to specify if the target part should be repeated and how much. If you input "3", the corresponding sound will be repeated 3 times, with sufficient silence in between to allow the learner to repeat what was just said.
  • the 3 buttons at the end:
  • click the delete cross to remove the line. Careful! All the content is lost, and there is no undo option yet!
  • click the bubble icon to add a sentence below the current one.
  • click the book icon to add a comment below the current one.

[edit] "Comments"

Such as the first line, from left to right:

  • The speaker defines which character says the comment. Most often this will be the teacher explaining something.
  • the text... does it need explanations?
  • A microphone icon: click it to pop up the sound recorder.
  • A cross icon to delete the line
  • A speech bubble to add a "sentence" after this line
  • A book icon to add a comment after this line

[edit] The sound recorder

The sound recorder looks like this:

There are 4 important elements in it:

  • The record button: When you first click it, you will see a message asking for your permission to access your microphone. You should click "Allow" in order to use Wikibabel. If you refuse, the server won't be able to access your microphone, and you cannot record anything. If you clicked "reject" by mistake, just close the recorder, and click a microphone icon again. You should be presented with the same message again when you click "record".
  • The play button: it allows you to listen to what you've just recorded. If you feel the quality of the sound is too bad or there is too much background noise, just click "record" again, and have another go!
  • The (close) link at the top left just closes the recorder panel. Whatever you've recorded is automatically added to the lesson editor (but not saved until you actually click the "save lesson" button at the bottom of the editor!).
  • The text above the recorder shows the text you're recording and some extra information which is useful to help us track down errors. This second bit will disappear soon.
  • The 5th bit is the ugly message box under the buttons, which shows a lot of messages from the server. Just ignore it. It is still there to help correct problems with the recorder.
